United Arab Emirates

The UAE has no permanent residence status and no ordinary naturalisation route. Every visa here, including the ten year Golden Visa, is a temporary permission that has to be renewed against a qualifying asset, salary or employer. That single fact reorders how you should read every number below.

Can you stay in the UAE long term?

Yes, but never permanently. A foreigner can realistically still be in the UAE in ten years, and the route that gets them there is a Golden Visa held through property or a senior salary. It renews every five or ten years for as long as the qualifying asset or the job survives. That is a long lease, not a status.

Everyone else runs a chain of shorter permits. A two year employer-sponsored residence visa that dies with the job. A one year virtual work permit that has to be re-evidenced annually. A five year retirement permit tested against assets you must still hold. None of these accumulate anything. Ten years of renewals leaves you exactly where you started, minus the fees.

The UAE sells long, well-administered, renewable temporary stays in a country with no income tax. It does not sell settlement. There is no PR clock to start and no citizenship clock to wait out, because neither exists for ordinary foreign residents. If your plan requires a permanent status or a passport, the UAE is a base, not a destination.

The one thing that does compound is money. A Golden Visa holder who keeps the property or the salary can renew indefinitely and treat the country as a permanent home in practice. That is the closest thing to settlement the system offers, and it is entirely conditional on the asset.

Start with your situation, not with the visa name. The Golden Visa is the only family of routes here that a person can hold without an employer, and it is the only one worth planning a decade around.

The programmes

Golden Visa, investor. A ten year residence permit tied to AED 2,000,000 of public investment or real estate. The property can be mortgaged or off plan, and only your wholly owned share counts. The trap is duration: the federal portal says five years for real estate while Dubai authorities say ten, so confirm the issued term in writing before you buy.

Golden Visa, professional. Ten years for employees earning AED 30,000 a month, with an attested degree and an occupation at skill level 1, 2 or 3 in the MOHRE classification. The salary must be on a registered contract and visible in bank statements, so allowances paid in cash do not count. Lose the job and the basis for the next renewal goes with it.

Virtual Work Residence Visa. One year, renewable, for people earning USD 3,500 a month from sources outside the UAE. It explicitly bars any UAE employer or UAE client. It is a base, not a bridge, and the income test can be re-run every twelve months.

Retirement Visa. Five years for people aged 55 and over with fifteen years of documented work history. The federal page now requires AED 1,000,000 of property and AED 1,000,000 of savings together, or AED 180,000 of annual income. Dubai applies its own higher income floor of AED 240,000. Most published summaries of this visa are out of date.

Employment residence visa. The ordinary two year permit sponsored by a UAE employer through MOHRE. No capital threshold, no route to permanence, and the visa ends with the job after a grace period. It is what most residents actually hold and it is the least secure thing on this page.

What the UAE is bad at

Settlement, entirely. There is no permanent residence and no ordinary naturalisation, so the entire category is missing rather than merely difficult. It is also bad at consistency: the federal portal and the Dubai authorities disagree on whether a property Golden Visa runs five years or ten, which means the most important number on this page depends on which counter you stand at.

Family rules are uneven. Dependant sponsorship on the virtual work route varies by emirate and cannot be relied on. Fees are charged per person, so a family of four pays four times for the same qualifying asset.

And the retirement visa shows the drift problem clearly. The version that circulates widely, AED 1,000,000 of property or savings, no longer matches the official page, which requires both. Anyone budgeting from a blog post will fall short at the counter.
