UAE Virtual Work Residence Visa

Work remotely for clients outside the UAE, show USD 3,500 a month of foreign income, and the UAE issues a year of residence.

The misunderstanding here is that this is a soft landing into the UAE labour market. It is the opposite. The permit explicitly bars working for a UAE employer or a UAE client. Taking a local contract on this visa is not a grey area, it is a breach that can be treated as illegal work. If your plan is to convert to a local job, start on an employment visa instead.

A second caveat on the evidence. The federal page for this visa would not render on 2026-10-22, so the USD 3,500 figure is confirmed only by immigration authority and secondary sources rather than by the primary page. Verify it before you build a budget on it.

Application flow

  1. Gather evidence of foreign employment or freelance income at or above USD 3,500 a month.
  2. Obtain health insurance, which is mandatory and not included in the permit.
  3. Apply through GDRFA Dubai for a Dubai base, or ICP for another emirate.
  4. Complete medical screening and Emirates ID enrolment.
  5. Collect the one year permit.
  6. Arrange housing and Ejari registration if you are in Dubai.
  7. Renew at twelve months with fresh income evidence.

Good fit

A remote employee earning USD 40,000 or more a year who wants a UAE base without taking a local job. Someone whose income is salaried and lands in a bank account on a predictable date. People who want the country for the lifestyle, the time zone or the flight connections and are indifferent to settlement.

Poor fit

Freelancers with irregular invoices, who will struggle to show a stable monthly figure. Anyone hoping to convert to local work, which this permit forbids. Anyone who needs certainty about bringing a family, because dependant sponsorship on this route is inconsistent between emirates.

Watchpoints

  1. The income must come from outside the UAE. A UAE client or a UAE salary breaches the permit and can be treated as illegal work.
  2. One year is short. Budget for renewal fees, insurance and Ejari every twelve months, and assume the threshold is re-tested rather than grandfathered.
  3. Health insurance is mandatory and separate. It is not bundled into the permit cost.
  4. Dependant sponsorship is not reliable. Some emirates allow it, others do not, so do not plan a family move around this route without a written answer from the emirate you will live in.
  5. The primary source is unconfirmed. The federal page did not load on 2026-10-22. Confirm the current income floor and fee with the issuing authority before applying.
