Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka issues residence visas that renew, and nothing that settles. There is no permanent residence status for an ordinary foreigner and no published naturalisation path, so a decade of renewals ends in exactly the same legal position as year one. That single fact should shape every decision about moving here.

Can you stay in Sri Lanka long term?

Yes, indefinitely, if you keep renewing. No, if by staying you mean settling.

Every ordinary route is a residence visa renewed annually or biennially. The Digital Nomad Visa, launched in February 2026, runs one year at a time with no permanent residence clock. The Investor Category Residence Visa gives five years, or ten with a larger sum, and still does not accumulate residence credit. The spouse visa is the only route that renews in long blocks, moving from one year to two year blocks and then five year blocks after five years of holding it, which makes it the one programme that can plausibly keep someone here for decades. It is also available only to spouses of Sri Lankan citizens.

The one genuine permanent residence scheme, published in 2024, is restricted to persons of Sri Lankan descent and their dependents. It cannot be bought. Descent has to be documented, often through birth certificates going back generations, and it was still being implemented rather than issuing at scale when the regulations appeared.

Two routes that the internet still sells are closed. My Dream Home, the USD 15,000 retirement programme, is extension only for existing holders. The Resident Guest Scheme is extension only as well. A new applicant cannot enter either, whatever an agent’s website says.

Sri Lanka is a good place to spend a year or five, and a bad place to plan a permanent move unless you are married to a Sri Lankan citizen or can prove Sri Lankan ancestry.

The programmes

Digital Nomad Visa. A one year residence visa for remote employees, freelancers and owners of businesses not registered in Sri Lanka, requiring USD 2,000 a month actually remitted into a Sri Lankan bank account. It is the only new long stay route and the most expensive residence category per person at USD 500 a year. The failure point is the Ministry of Digital Economy recommendation, which is a precondition with no usable published procedure.

Investor Category Residence Visa. Five years of residence for USD 100,000 invested, or ten years for USD 200,000, with the money moved through an Inward Investment Account into a Visa Programme Foreign Currency Account. Holders are treated as non-residents for income tax, which is a real advantage found nowhere else on this list. The failure point is the bank letter, which must name the account type and state the balance as at date.

Employment Residence Visa. A one year permit tied to a named Sri Lankan employer, with the line ministry, Board of Investment or Central Bank carrying the approval depending on the sub-category. There is no salary floor. Small private employers often cannot produce the company documents and ministry recommendation the route requires, and changing jobs means a new application rather than a transfer.

Spouse Visa. The route that actually renews for decades. A foreign spouse of a Sri Lankan citizen gets one year first, then two year blocks, then five year blocks after five years, with employment permitted. The marriage must be at least six months old at application, so a newly married couple starts on a tourist visa. The long blocks are discretionary, not a right.

Tourist ETA and extensions. Thirty days on arrival, extendable in paid bands to 90, 180 and 270 days. There is no single 180 day tourist visa: the 180 days is 30 days plus a USD 100 extension plus a USD 150 extension, about USD 250 total for a UK, EU, US, Canadian or Australian passport. From 25 May 2026, 40 nationalities get the first 30 days free, but the extension fees still apply.

What Sri Lanka is bad at

Settlement. There is no permanent residence and no naturalisation for ordinary foreigners, so long residence produces another renewal rather than a status. Retirement, where both legacy schemes are closed to new applicants and the digital nomad visa is the only realistic substitute. Administration, where police clearances must be under three months old, bank letters must use exact wording, line ministry recommendations gate employment and nomad applications, and a Health Protection Plan is required that most applicants have never heard of. Tourists, who are sold a 180 day visa that does not exist and quoted a USD 85 fee that is wrong for most passports.
