Residence Visa, Employment Category

A Sri Lankan employer cannot simply hire you. The employment visa needs an approval from the relevant ministry, the Board of Investment or the Central Bank first, and then it runs a year at a time.

There is no published salary floor. The employer and the approving authority carry the entire test, which is why two people with identical jobs can get different outcomes depending on who signs the recommendation. It is also not a route you can enter from inside the country.

Application flow

  1. Confirm which sub-category applies: government project, BOI, bank, private sector, or NGO.
  2. The employer obtains the approval from the line ministry, BOI or Central Bank.
  3. The employer assembles company documents: registration certificate, articles of association and board details.
  4. Obtain a Health Protection Plan, separate from travel insurance.
  5. Apply for the entry visa in the correct category before travelling. Do not enter as a tourist.
  6. Submit the residence visa application on arrival with the approval in hand.
  7. Renew annually, filing while the passport has two months’ validity beyond the intended stay.

Good fit

Someone with a confirmed written offer from a Sri Lankan employer that has done this before, or an expatriate posted to a Board of Investment project. It suits staff of banks, NGOs and international organisations, where the sponsor has an established immigration function. It is the normal route for specialists on government-approved infrastructure work.

Poor fit

Anyone job hunting. You cannot look for work on a tourist visa and then convert, and leaving to reset the entry category costs a round trip. Anyone joining a small or newly formed private company, since the document set includes items young companies often cannot produce. Anyone who expects to change employers without a new application.

Watchpoints

  1. You cannot convert from a tourist visa in country. The permit requires the correct entry visa. Plan the exit and re-entry, or the job offer is unusable.
  2. The private sector document set is heavy. Company registration certificate, articles of association, board details and a line ministry recommendation. Small employers routinely fail at this step.
  3. A Health Protection Plan is mandatory. It is a separate product from travel insurance and most applicants have never heard of it.
  4. The visa is tied to the employer. Changing jobs means a fresh application, not a transfer, and the clock resets.
  5. Renewal has a passport validity rule. File while the passport has at least two months’ validity beyond the intended stay, or the renewal stalls.
  6. No salary floor cuts both ways. Low-paid roles can qualify, but there is no objective standard to appeal to if an officer refuses.
  7. The approving authority varies by sub-category. Applying through the wrong channel is the most common procedural error.
