Digital Nomad Visa (Residence Visa 10)
Introduced in February 2026, and unusual for the region because it is a residence visa rather than a visit pass. One year, for remote workers paid from outside Sri Lanka.
The most common misunderstanding is that this is a lightweight tourist alternative. It is not. It requires a Ministry of Digital Economy recommendation before you travel, remittances that land in a Sri Lankan bank account, and tax registration at renewal. It is also the most expensive residence category in the fee schedule, at USD 500 per person per year.

Application flow
- Apply to the Ministry of Digital Economy for the recommendation, before booking travel.
- Obtain a police clearance dated within three months of submission.
- Buy international health insurance that explicitly covers medical care in Sri Lanka.
- Open a Sri Lankan bank account and begin remitting USD 2,000 a month, keeping credits visible.
- Submit the application to the Residence Visa Division with the recommendation.
- Pay USD 500 per applicant and collect the visa.
- At renewal, show continued remittances and IRD tax registration.
Good fit
A freelancer or remote employee earning USD 24,000 a year or more who wants a legal twelve month base and a local bank account. It suits someone who intends to keep foreign clients and has no interest in the local labour market. It also works for a couple where both earn, since the dependent fee is fixed per person.
Poor fit
Anyone who reads the word residence and assumes a path to permanent status. There is no PR clock. Anyone who wants local clients, because local employment is prohibited and local invoicing would breach the category. Anyone whose income arrives in cash or into a third country account.
Watchpoints
- The ministry recommendation is a precondition, not a formality. Apply before travelling. The ministry’s public service page currently returns no usable instructions, so budget time for a process with no published checklist.
- USD 2,000 is a remittance test. Money has to arrive in a Sri Lankan account, not merely be earned. Proof is checked at renewal, so a single strong month does not carry the year.
- Police clearance must be under three months old at submission. A certificate ordered too early is worthless.
- Insurance must name Sri Lanka. A generic international policy that excludes the country fails.
- The fee is per person. USD 500 each means USD 2,000 for a family of four, every year, before agent fees.
- Dependents beyond two cost extra. The remittance requirement rises by USD 500 for each dependent beyond two.
- Leaving has a notice period. Permanent departure requires two months’ written notice to terminate.
- Tax treatment is unresolved. Investor visa holders are expressly non-resident for tax. No equivalent provision exists here, and renewal requires IRD registration. Get advice before year two.
