Every Malaysia Long Stay Route Compared

Which Malaysia long stay route should you pick?

Malaysia sells long visits. MM2H, PVIP and DE Rantau all give between two and twenty years of legal stay and none of them feeds a residence clock. The only ladder runs through Employment Pass, then Residence Pass-Talent, then a discretionary permanent residence application. If permanence is the goal, five of the six routes are the wrong product.

A Special Economic Zone category of MM2H also exists for Forest City in Johor, with lower thresholds approved at state level. It is a separate product with its own conditions, and it is not available outside that zone.

Question one: will you work?

If yes, MM2H Silver and Gold are excluded outright. The conditions prohibit employment and business activity at both tiers, and buying the more expensive tier does not change that. The work-capable options are MM2H Platinum, PVIP, Employment Pass and Residence Pass-Talent.

If no, MM2H Silver is the cheapest federal long stay, provided you accept the compulsory property purchase.

Question two: do you need permanence?

If yes, only the employment ladder works. Employment Pass, three years at RM 15,000, Residence Pass-Talent, then a discretionary application. Meeting every criterion does not guarantee approval.

If no, then duration and work rights are the only variables that matter, and the comparison becomes simple arithmetic on cost per year.

Question three: can you document monthly income?

PVIP requires RM 40,000 a month, documented. That single test eliminates more applicants than the deposit does, because savings cannot substitute for income.

DE Rantau requires USD 24,000 a year in tech, or USD 60,000 outside it. Which band applies depends on the profession on the application.

MM2H has no income test at all, which is why it attracts retirees with capital and no salary.

What each route is good at

  • MM2H Silver: cost of entry. The cheapest federal long stay, if you wanted the property anyway.
  • MM2H Gold: duration without renewal. Fifteen years, no work rights, a bigger property floor.
  • MM2H Platinum: work on an MM2H pass. The only tier that permits it.
  • PVIP: working without an employer. No sponsor, no salary band, twenty years, no presence requirement.
  • Employment Pass: the only ladder. Employer tied, and the first rung of the only route to permanence.
  • Residence Pass-Talent: independence. Employer free, spouse may work, ten years.
  • DE Rantau: cheap and short. Two years, low income test, no future.

The decision that overrides the rest

Are you working, and do you need to stay permanently?

Working and permanent means the employment ladder, with all of its salary and tax requirements. Working and temporary means PVIP or MM2H Platinum. Not working means MM2H Silver, with a property you must hold for a decade.

Everything else is a variant of one of those three answers.

Watchpoints

  1. Five of six routes lead nowhere. Only the employment ladder reaches permanent residence.
  2. MM2H Silver and Gold prohibit work entirely. The property requirement is separate and compulsory.
  3. PVIP’s income test is the real gate, not the RM 1,000,000 deposit.
  4. The Employment Pass bands were rewritten on 1 June 2026, and renewals are caught.
  5. DE Rantau ends at 24 months with no bridge to MM2H, PVIP or an Employment Pass.
  6. Dual citizenship is not permitted, so naturalisation means renouncing your existing passport.
