Long-term residence permit (Uzun Dönem İkamet İzni)

Indefinite Turkish residence status for foreigners who have already lived in the country legally for eight continuous years.

The thing to understand is that this is not the citizenship path. Turkish naturalisation requires five years of residence, not eight, so citizenship is normally available three years earlier. Anyone who spends eight years renewing permits and then applies here has sequenced the system backwards. The permit is for people who cannot or will not naturalise: those keeping an original nationality where dual citizenship is not permitted, or who cannot meet the naturalisation conditions.

The permit is genuinely indefinite. The card is replaced every ten years, but the status does not expire.

Application flow

  1. Confirm eight years of continuous legal residence, counting student time at 50 percent.
  2. Confirm no gaps: no overstay, no expired permit, no period out of status.
  3. Assemble income evidence, health insurance, and confirm no social assistance in the last three years.
  4. Apply through e-ikamet and book the appointment.
  5. Attend for biometrics and an interview.
  6. Wait for the decision, typically two to six months.
  7. Collect the indefinite card, which is replaced every ten years.

Good fit

A long-settled expat who wants to stop renewing annually and does not want Turkish citizenship, or cannot hold it. A retiree or self-funded resident with eight unbroken years, steady foreign income and clean insurance. Someone whose home country does not allow dual nationality and who therefore needs a permanent status without a passport.

Poor fit

Anyone who has broken residence continuity, since a gap resets the clock entirely. Anyone who spent most of the eight years on student permits, which count at half. And most people who have simply reached eight years, who should have applied for citizenship at five and are now three years late.

Watchpoints

  1. Student time counts at 50 percent. Four years of university counts as two. A degree plus four years of work gets you to six, not eight.
  2. Any gap resets the clock. A short overstay or an expired permit restarts the eight years.
  3. Social assistance is an automatic refusal. Receiving any in the previous three years ends the application, with no discretion reported.
  4. This is not the citizenship route. Citizenship at five years is faster and stronger. Applying here first is a costly sequencing error, not a stepping stone.
  5. Status can be revoked. Absence over one year, or a serious crime, ends it. This is permanent residence, not an unconditional right.
  6. The income test is judged, not published. Officers assess against living standards, so documentation matters more than the number.
