Digital Nomad Visa (Digital Nomad Identification Certificate)

Turkey gates this twice. A Digital Nomad Identification Certificate comes before any visa application, and only then does the one year residence permit follow, for remote workers earning foreign income.

The misunderstanding is about access, not money. Turkey publishes a closed list of 36 acceptable nationalities: the EU member states, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, the UK, the US, Canada, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and China are not on it. Neither is any other African state, and almost none of Asia. There is no waiver. If your passport is not on the list, this programme does not exist for you.

The second misunderstanding is that the certificate is a visa. It is a pre-approval for the consular application, and the consulate can still refuse.

Application flow

  1. Confirm your nationality is on the 36 country list. If not, stop.
  2. Confirm you are 21 to 55 and hold a university degree.
  3. Assemble income evidence at USD 3,000 per month, plus a foreign employment or client contract.
  4. Apply for the certificate through GoTurkey.
  5. Take the certificate to a consulate and apply for the visa.
  6. Enter Turkey and apply for the residence permit within the visa period.

Good fit

An EU, UK, US, Canadian, Russian or Ukrainian professional earning USD 3,000 or more a month from a foreign employer, with a degree certificate. Someone who accepts annual renewal with no promise of permanence.

Poor fit

Anyone from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam or China, who cannot apply at all. Portfolio-only freelancers without a degree, refused at certificate stage. Anyone 56 or over, since the 21 to 55 band is enforced. Anyone who needs to bring a spouse or children, because this permit brings nobody.

Watchpoints

  1. The nationality list is closed. 36 countries, published, no discretion. Most of Asia and Africa is excluded and income, property or a willing employer do not change it.
  2. The degree requirement is hard. A portfolio does not substitute. No degree, no certificate.
  3. The age band is enforced. A 56 year old remote worker has no route here.
  4. The certificate is not a visa. Refusal at the consulate is possible after it is issued.
  5. Secure the residence permit after arrival. Letting the visa lapse creates an overstay that complicates every later application.
  6. 183 days makes you a tax resident. Many nomads treat Turkey as a low-tax base and find worldwide income in scope at filing.
  7. Renewal has no published ceiling. The legislation is silent and practice varies by province.
