Thailand Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

Five years, multiple entry, for remote workers, soft power participants and their families. Thailand launched it in 2024 and it has become the default for people who earn online.

Most sites call this the Thailand digital nomad visa. The government does not. The official name is the Destination Thailand Visa, and the two eligible purposes are workcation and Thai soft power activity. If your plan is remote work for a foreign employer, you fall under workcation, and that distinction matters at the counter.

Why it exists

Thailand spent a decade absorbing remote workers through visa exemption rotations and education visas. Neither was legal for work. The DTV created a real category for people earning abroad and spending in Thailand, and attached a soft power purpose for people coming to train in Muay Thai, study Thai cooking, or receive medical treatment.

The soft power purpose is not a loophole for people who want to live in Thailand without income proof. It requires an acceptance letter from an approved institution, and Thai language schools were removed from the eligible list in 2026.

Application flow

  1. Confirm which purpose you are applying under: workcation or soft power.
  2. Confirm you are applying from your country of citizenship or permanent residence. Since 31 August 2026 this is enforced, and third-country applications are refused.
  3. Assemble the seven core documents, including police clearance issued within three months.
  4. Apply online through thaievisa.go.th, choosing the mission with jurisdiction over your location.
  5. Pay the fee, which varies by mission from about USD 400 down to THB 10,000.
  6. Receive the visa as an electronic document.
  7. Enter Thailand. Each entry gives 180 days.
  8. If you need more time in a single stay, apply at the local immigration office for one extension of 180 days, THB 1,900.
  9. Exit and re-enter to start a fresh 180 days. The visa is valid for five years.

Good fit

Remote employees with a clean employment contract and an employer willing to sign a letter. Freelancers with contracts or a portfolio showing real client work. Business owners with a registered company abroad. People who want a five year permission to come and go from Thailand without maintaining a deposit or buying property. Anyone whose income documentation is straightforward and whose bank balance can sit still for three months.

Poor fit

People who need a work permit, because the DTV does not provide one and working for a Thai entity on it is a deportable offence. People who need a path to permanent residence, because there is none. People whose savings move in and out of investments, because crypto and brokerage statements are refused as proof of funds. People applying from a third country, since August 2026. Anyone over 50 who actually wants to retire, who should be looking at O-A or the LTR instead.

Watchpoints

  1. The balance must be an ending balance in each of the three months. A single deposit of THB 500,000 the week before you apply is refused. The money has to sit.
  2. Crypto and investment portfolios are not accepted. Cash in a savings or checking account only.
  3. Police clearance is now mandatory and dated. Issued within three months, from your country of citizenship or residence. This adds weeks to any plan.
  4. Third-country applications are refused. Since 31 August 2026 you must apply where you are a citizen or permanent resident. People who used to apply from a neighbouring country while travelling can no longer do so.
  5. The visa is not residence. Five years of validity means five years of eligibility to enter, not five years of continuous stay. You are a visitor who is allowed to stay 180 days at a time.
  6. No work permit means no Thai income. Not freelancing for Thai clients, not a salary from a Thai company, not “helping out” a Thai business.
  7. Mission practice varies. The same application is assessed differently in different embassies. The Washington DC list is the most explicit published version and is a reasonable baseline, but check your own mission’s page.
