Taiwan Employment Gold Card
A four in one document combining a resident visa, an open work permit, an ARC and a re-entry permit, issued for one, two or three years at the applicant’s choice.
This is the best settlement product in the country. It is the only route that turns a self-employed foreigner into a permanent resident on a predictable clock: three years of the card at 183 days average residence a year, then an APRC application.

Application flow
- Pick the field and the specific clause before opening the form.
- Assemble evidence for that clause: salary statements, employment letters, patents, publications or awards.
- Apply online and pay the fee. Fees are not refunded on rejection.
- Enter Taiwan, then collect the card at NIA within 30 days. The three year clock runs from the issue date printed on it.
- Apply separately for the tax benefit. It is not automatic.
- Apply for the APRC after three full years at 183 days average residence.
Good fit
A senior professional or consultant who can document NT$160,000 a month, or a PhD holder or award winner in one of the twelve fields. Also the remote worker with eight years of verifiable experience in the digital field, who qualifies with no salary test at all.
Poor fit
Anyone earning USD 40,000 to USD 60,000 a year. They fail the salary route, usually fail the experience route, and should be looking at the nomad visa, knowing it leads nowhere.
Watchpoints
- The twelve fields decide everything. Architecture, Biotechnology, Culture and Arts, Digital, Economy, Education, Environment, Finance, Law, National Defense, Science and Technology, Sports. The wrong field is the most common rejection.
- Digital is the back door. Eight years of experience, no salary test. Remote workers default to the Economy salary route and fail for no reason.
- The clock starts on the issue date, not collection. A card that lapses for a week resets continuous residence and costs a year.
- Fees are lost on rejection. NT$3,700 for one year, NT$4,700 for two, NT$5,700 for three. US passports applying from abroad pay NT$7,605 to NT$9,605.
- Hong Kong and Macau holders are excluded from PR. The card works. Permanent residence does not.
- The tax break does not renew with the card. Five years from the first qualifying tax year, once.
