Maldives Marriage Visa (Resident Visa)
Marriage to a Maldivian citizen brings a resident visa, not permanence. It is granted a year at a time at the start, and renewal is discretionary.
This is the only route in the Maldives that can plausibly last a lifetime, and it is still not a path to a passport. The first permit is one year. Renewals of up to five years are discretionary, not automatic, and the residence is attached to the marriage rather than to time served in the country.

Application flow
- The Maldivian spouse files a Sponsorship Declaration on IMUGA and it is approved before travel.
- The marriage is registered at the Family Court. In the Maldives this is registration under Islamic law.
- The Marriage Visa application is submitted on IMUGA with the registration certificate.
- The visa is issued for one year.
- Renewal is filed within two months of expiry, with updated evidence.
Good fit
A genuine long term marriage to a Maldivian citizen, where the couple intends to live in the country and the foreign spouse accepts that the permit is renewed at the state’s discretion. It also suits a couple who already live in the Maldives on another visa and want to regularise on the basis of the marriage.
Poor fit
Anyone treating marriage as a fast route to a passport. It is not one, and there is no shortened naturalisation clock published for spouses. Anyone unwilling to convert, since a non-Muslim foreign spouse is normally required to do so before the marriage can be registered. Anyone whose plan depends on the permit being granted automatically every five years.
Watchpoints
- Registration is under Islamic law. A non-Muslim foreign spouse is normally required to convert. That is a personal and legal decision, and no agent should hurry it.
- Thalassaemia screening is now required. It was added to the marriage application in 2025, and a missing screening delays the registration rather than the visa.
- The first permit is one year only. Renewals of up to five years are discretionary. Budget for the annual version and treat the longer one as a bonus.
- Divorce ends the residence unless there is a Maldivian child or another resident category applies. Years already spent in the country count for nothing on their own.
- Marrying inside the country does not authorise work. The change of category must be applied for after registration, and working in the gap is a violation.
- Employment still needs its own permit. The marriage visa permits residence, not work.
