Residence Pass-Talent (RP-T)

What the Residence Pass-Talent detaches is the right to stay from one employer. Ten years, for senior expatriates already working in Malaysia.

RP-T is the only pass in Malaysia from which a permanent residence application is realistically made, and it is not an entry route. You cannot apply from outside the country, and you cannot apply before three years on an Employment Pass. It is a mid-career move, and treating it as anything else wastes an application.

Application flow

  1. Confirm you hold a valid Employment Pass with more than 3 months validity remaining. Without that, you are not eligible to file.
  2. Confirm 3 consecutive years on an EP, 2 years of Malaysian tax paid, and a basic salary of RM 15,000 or more excluding allowances and bonuses.
  3. Assemble the degree or professional certificate and evidence of 5 years total experience.
  4. Submit through the RP-T portal yourself. TalentCorp does not accept agent submissions.
  5. Wait for the RP-T Panel. Meeting every criterion does not guarantee approval, and rejection is not meaningfully appealable.
  6. On approval, collect the pass and note that your dependants are covered, with work rights for your spouse.
  7. If you later leave Malaysia with an expired pass, obtain exit clearance. It has been enforced since 18 November 2025.

Good fit

An expatriate with 3 or more years in Malaysia at RM 15,000 a month who wants to change employers without restarting the immigration process, or who wants a spouse to be able to work. People building toward a PR application and willing to accept that the outcome is discretionary.

Poor fit

New arrivals. There is no way to apply from outside Malaysia or before the three years are served. Also a poor fit for anyone paying a consultant to “arrange” an RP-T, since no agent can submit one.

Watchpoints

  1. You must already hold a valid Employment Pass with more than 3 months validity. This is a mid-career move, not an entry route.
  2. Meeting every criterion does not guarantee approval. The RP-T Panel decides, and rejection is not appealable in any meaningful sense.
  3. Exit clearance is enforced for expired RP-T holders as of 18 November 2025. Leaving without it creates a problem on re-entry.
  4. Agents cannot submit for you. Any “RP-T consultant” charging a fee is selling something they cannot deliver.
  5. RP-T years do not automatically convert to PR. The PR application is a separate discretionary process with its own paperwork.
  6. The salary floor is basic salary only. Allowances and bonuses do not count toward RM 15,000.
