Employment Pass (Category I, II and III)

The employer-sponsored work pass for foreign professionals, issued in three salary bands and valid for five to ten years.

This is the only route in Malaysia that leads anywhere near settlement, which makes it the most valuable pass in the country and the one most often overlooked in favour of MM2H. It is also being tightened: the salary bands were rewritten with effect from 1 June 2026, and the changes catch renewals as well as new applications.

Application flow

  1. Secure a job offer at or above the band for the category you qualify for. The employer is the applicant, not you.
  2. Confirm the employer is registered with the Expatriate Services Division. New sponsors take longer.
  3. The employer files through MYXpats Centre with the employment contract and salary evidence.
  4. Expect 5 to 15 working days for a registered sponsor.
  5. Endorse the pass on arrival, then apply for dependant passes for a spouse and children under 18 at the same time.
  6. Keep salary documentation aligned with tax filings. Renewal checks the band in force at that date, not the band you entered on.
  7. If you want to stay long term, plan the RP-T move at the three year mark.

Good fit

A professional with a genuine job offer at RM 10,000 or more per month and a degree-level role. People who want the option of a long stay and are willing to go through an employer to get it. Anyone whose actual plan is to reach Residence Pass-Talent and then try for permanent residence.

Poor fit

Remote workers, freelancers and anyone without a Malaysian employer. Also a poor fit for people whose salary is structured as allowances to reach a band: the salary is verified against tax filings and the structure fails at renewal.

Watchpoints

  1. The June 2026 rewrite doubled the Category I floor. It moved from RM 10,000 to RM 20,000, and Category III rose from RM 3,000 to RM 5,000. Renewals are caught, not just new applicants.
  2. Categories II and III now require a succession plan, meaning the employer must document how a Malaysian replaces you.
  3. The pass is employer-bound. Changing jobs means a fresh application, and a gap between employers can force you out of the country.
  4. Dependant passes for children stop at 18. University-age children need a student pass.
  5. Salary is verified against tax filings. Structuring part of pay as an allowance to hit the band fails at renewal.
  6. Five years of EP is a floor, not a promise. The PR application is discretionary and most applicants do not succeed.
