DE Rantau Nomad Pass
A professional visit pass for remote workers and founders serving clients outside Malaysia, valid for 3 to 12 months with one extension.
The common description, “Malaysia digital nomad visa”, overstates it in two ways. It is a visit pass rather than a visa in the residence sense, and it is capped at 24 months total with no route onward into MM2H or PVIP without starting over. It is cheap and fast, and it is explicitly temporary.

Application flow
- Confirm which income test applies to you: USD 24,000 a year for tech and digital work, USD 60,000 for non-tech business roles.
- Assemble the contract plus 3 months of payslips and bank statements.
- Apply to MDEC. Expect 6 to 8 weeks.
- If you are already inside Malaysia on a tourist pass, plan to leave. There is no conversion, and approval while in the country still requires an exit and re-entry for endorsement.
- Enter and get endorsed, then collect the e-pass within about a week.
- If you want longer, apply for the single 12 month extension. There is nothing beyond it.
- Open an offshore bank account before you arrive. Most Malaysian banks will not open one on a Professional Visit Pass.
Good fit
A developer or designer earning USD 30,000 or more remotely who wants a cheap 12 month base in Kuala Lumpur or Penang. People testing whether Malaysia suits them before committing to a longer, more expensive pass. Founders with foreign clients and clean contracts.
Poor fit
Anyone earning under USD 24,000 a year. Anyone who wants to stay beyond two years, since the cap is hard. Anyone planning to live in Sabah or Sarawak, which the pass does not cover. And anyone who needs their spouse to earn locally.
Watchpoints
- The pass covers Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan only. Sabah and Sarawak are excluded, and entry there is on a tourist pass.
- There is no conversion from a tourist pass. If you apply while inside Malaysia and are approved, you must leave and re-enter to be endorsed.
- The 24 month cap is hard. No renewal beyond it, and no route into MM2H or PVIP without starting a fresh application on that programme’s terms.
- Most Malaysian banks will not open an account on a Professional Visit Pass. Plan on keeping an offshore account.
- Your spouse cannot work, and dependants are assessed separately, so approval for you does not mean approval for them.
- Tax residency is unresolved in the published guidance. A 182 day presence can create Malaysian tax residency, and the interaction with the foreign-source income exemption is not addressed in the pass FAQ. Get advice before you plan a long stay.
