K visa (科学技术人才签证)
A ten-year multiple-entry visa for young foreign STEM graduates, created to let them enter China without an employer, a sponsor or an invitation letter.
The gap between the law and the practice is the whole story. The category has existed since 1 October 2025 and appears in the foreign ministry’s online application guide, but there is no document checklist, no fee schedule, no definition of “young”, and no definition of “well-known university”. Consular staff improvise, and different posts have given applicants openly contradictory rules. One confirmed public issuance exists.
The second misunderstanding is what the visa is. It is an entry visa, not a residence permit and not a work authorisation. Arriving on one does not by itself let you take a job in China or stay beyond 180 days.
Programme snapshot
| Item | Current rule |
|---|---|
| Main audience | Young foreign STEM graduates of “well-known” universities and researchers at “well-known” institutions |
| Route family | Skilled work, in intention |
| Validity | 10 years, multiple entry |
| Stay per entry | 180 days in the one confirmed issuance |
| Threshold | Bachelor’s degree or above. No income test, no sponsor, no invitation letter, no cap |
| Renewal | Not published |
| Settlement | None. No residence status and no PR clock |
| PR clock | None |
| Citizenship clock | None |
| Family | Not published. No dependant category has been announced |
| Local employment | Unclear. Sold as allowing work, study or business without a sponsor, but no work permit exemption has been published |
| Tax headline | 180-day stays keep most holders under the 183-day line, but back-to-back stays can still make you a resident |
| Processing | About 5 months in the documented case; some posts say the category “hasn’t been rolled out” locally |
Application flow
- Check whether your local Chinese mission lists the K category at all. Several do not, and no central list says which do.
- Establish your STEM degree and whether your university counts as “well-known” by whatever standard the post applies. There is no published list.
- Apply through the mission’s visa centre, selecting K where it is offered, and expect to be asked for documents that appear on no checklist.
- Enter within the visa’s validity. Each stay is 180 days.
- Before day 180, either leave or attempt to convert to a residence permit, which needs a qualifying purpose and a sponsor you do not have.
Good fit
A PhD in a hard science from a top-tier university who wants to explore research collaborations in China, with no start date and no dependants. Someone treating the visa as a series of long visits rather than a move.
Poor fit
Anyone with a job start date, a family, or a need for a work permit. And anyone told by an agent that this is a settled programme.
Watchpoints
- Practice diverges by post, and none of it is written down. A Pakistani applicant was told the visa did not exist locally and was asked for a master’s degree. A Beijing applicant was told it was for fresh 2025 graduates only. Neither rule appears in any official text.
- It confers no work permit and no residence permit. Landing on a K visa does not make employment lawful and does not extend your stay past 180 days.
- Issuance numbers are unpublished. One confirmed public case in twelve months is the entire evidence base. No consultancy or agency has produced a second.
- The precedent is slow. The R visa took five years from creation in 2013 to nationwide operation in 2018. Expect a similar trajectory, and do not plan around the earlier date.
- The tax position is untested. Repeated 180-day stays with short gaps can make you a tax resident under the 183-day test, and no guidance addresses K holders specifically.
