Temporary residence status on the grounds of employment, study and family ties
Three one-year grounds that share a duration, a fee and a PR clock but almost nothing else: a signed Armenian employment contract, enrolment at an Armenian institution, or a close family tie to a resident or citizen.
The employment ground changed most. The labour market test was abolished on 1 November 2026 and replaced by the quota, and a work entry visa is now required before applying. Study is unchanged and still leads nowhere on its own. The family ground was cut back to spouse, parent and child.

Application flow
- Establish the qualifying document: a contract, an enrolment letter, or a marriage, birth or parentage certificate with housing proof.
- Employment applicants who need a visa must first obtain a work entry visa, AMD 15,000 (2026), valid up to 120 days and issued once per calendar year.
- File the application. Employment goes through workpermit.am; study and family move to permits.am on 1 November 2026.
- Pay the state fee, AMD 155,950 (2026), and wait 30 days for a decision.
- On approval, collect the card. Employment cards are tied to the named employer.
- At year end, file a fresh application. There is no extension as of right.
Good fit
Someone with a real Armenian job offer, especially in IT, where the employer handles the filing. A student paying local tuition, which is cheap by regional standards. A foreign spouse of an Armenian citizen, who has the most predictable file and the fastest citizenship route in the country.
Poor fit
A remote worker with a foreign employer. This route does not fit and is not needed, since the business ground is cheaper and needs no sponsor. Anyone treating enrolment as a cheap residence permit, since attendance is checked and institutions report dropouts. Siblings, grandparents and grandchildren, who lost sponsorship rights in 2026.
Watchpoints
- The work entry visa comes first. From 1 November 2026 a visa-national applying on employment grounds must already hold one. Arriving on a tourist visa and applying directly is an express refusal ground.
- The founder and director exemption was abolished. Founders and directors of companies with 50 percent or more foreign participation used to be exempt. They now need the permit, as do employees of branches and representative offices of foreign companies.
- The quota replaces the labour market test. The same unpublished number as the business route. Eligibility is no longer a guarantee.
- Study is a dead end by itself. The PR clock only helps if you can switch to a ground that supports permanent residence after graduation.
- Cost favours the business route. Tuition plus the AMD 155,950 fee is more expensive than a sole trader card for most people.
- The family list is now closed, with housing that is assessed rather than declared.
